Sedalia/Pettis County is the regional retail hub for the West Central Region of Missouri consisting of 13 counties. The top industries are retail trade, farming, construction, food services and federal/military. In 2015, Pettis County led the region in taxable sales total revenue with over $630 million in sales. This figure is 25% of the total of West Central Region retail sales and it surpasses the next highest county's sales by more than $171 million.
Our world-class economic development office, retail recruitment team and Main Street Downtown Development regularly work with the City's Community Development Department to create a seamless process that is friendly to entrepreneurs and corporations alike. These award winning teams are in place to answer all needs in an efficient, fast and practical method. Any business barrier is quickly assessed and overcome through collaborative assessment and decision-making. The Department's One-Stop Shop process for licensing and permits is an often-cited model used by other area communities as an example of best practices in streamlining government processes for business development.
The City of Sedalia has been recognized state-wide for outstanding support of downtown revitalization efforts as John Simmons, Community Development Director was selected as the “Outstanding Public Official” by the Missouri Main Street Connection. Community Development is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and attends the International RECon Conference and other regional conferences where he also presents session topics.
Our City's economic and industrial development efforts are led by Jessica Craig with Economic Development - Sedalia. EDSPC specializes in marketing Sedalia and Pettis County, MO to relocating industrial companies as well as retaining our strong industrial base. Over the past 10 years, EDSPC has assisted 55 companies with new and expanding facilities resulting in over $315 million in new capital investment and 2000 new jobs in Pettis County. With an average wage of $42,584, these new jobs have brought a total new payroll of over $85 million to the area since 2006.
Under Meg Liston, our Main Street Director, we have seen over $24 million in private investment in the downtown area, leveraged by over $6 million in public investment in infrastructure. This National Historic District is quickly redeveloping a residential focus. This strategy has recently caught the attention of national retailers who are locating in the downtown area where residential demand for retail offerings is increasing.
