Sedalia Fire Department
The Sedalia Fire Department (SFD) is dedicated to the protection of the residents and businesses of Sedalia and to those who visit our beautiful city. The Department protects the 18.7 square miles of Sedalia from its Central Station on South Hancock Avenue and from its Headquarters Station across from the State Fairgrounds on West 16th Street. The City of Sedalia currently holds an ISO rating of Class 3. The Department is comprised of forty-two dedicated, professional fire fighters and is led by Chief Gregory Harrell and Deputy Chief Mathew Irwin.
SFD responds to structure fires, wild land fires, vehicular accidents, search and rescue missions, emergency medical events, and a host of mutual aid situations with a fleet of two engines, one quint, one brush truck, one hazardous materials command vehicle and various support vehicles. Beyond fire suppression and rescue services, SFD provides fire safety education to groups of all ages, works to enforce the city's fire codes, and completes fire cause and origin investigations.
In addition to serving the 20,430 residents of Sedalia, SFD provides mutual aid to protect the 19,691 non-city residents of Pettis County. SFD also provides mutual aid to the Missouri state capital in Jefferson City sixty miles to the east and to the facilities and personnel of Whiteman Air Force Base twenty miles to the west.
SFD also provides protection for the Missouri State Fairgrounds. The Missouri State Fair, which attracts more than 300,000 visitors each year to the Fair alone, occupies a 150-acre site that is contained completely within the city limits of Sedalia. The Fairgrounds host events year-round in the various buildings and facilities on the property and SFD has a station located within 150 feet of the grounds’ main entrance to support operations at and protection of the Missouri State Fairgrounds.
