Mayor Proclaims Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival Days

(SEDALIA, MISSOURI) : On Thursday, May 21, Mayor Elaine Horn issued a proclamation designating June 3-7, 2009 as Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival Days in Sedalia.

Text of Proclamation

Whereas: Scott Joplin, composer and pianist, was born near Texarkana, Texas, was originally a self-taught and itinerant musician who studied at the George R. Smith College in Sedalia to advance his musical skills (1896); and

Whereas: though Scott Joplin considered Sedalia home for only a few years, it was a home with a special meaning for him and it is with good reason that Sedalia has become central to the Joplin story and the site of the annual Scott Joplin Festival; and

Whereas: he used his musical knowledge to help other itinerant musicians notate their own compositions, just as he was doing with his. He then joined with a music publisher, John S. Stark of Sedalia, and began to receive both credit and money from his own ‘rags’, especially after the success of his ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ (1899); and

Whereas: Scott Joplin toured throughout the Midwest, billed as the ‘King of Ragtime’ as he played dozens of his own original ragtimes on the piano; and

Whereas: there is no question as to Joplin’s greatness, his talent and his importance in the history of ragtime and American music.

NOW THEREFORE, I, MARY ELAINE HORN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI do hereby proclaim June 3 – June 7, 2009 as "SCOTT JOPLIN RAGTIME FESTIVAL DAYS" in Sedalia, and encourage all citizens to celebrate ragtime at its finest at the 29th Annual Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival June 3 – June 7, 2009 in Sedalia, showcasing fabulous entertainment and featuring top musicians.
